Going to Sweden in December just sounds about right, doesn’t it? Well, we had unfinished business in Malmö, or in other words we really wanted to show everyone the result of our project we started in August. As we left Berlin we had about 250 magazines with us and a USB with the Malmö film. We dropped the magazines at the Bryggeriet Gymnasium and build a little exhibition corner with the big help of our man Nils Svensson. I don’t want to spoil the whole story but of course we ended up singing Karaoke. All photos by Conny Mirbach.

Last weekend, each country in Europe sent its best shop-team to Pier 15 Skatepark in Breda, the Netherlands, for the finals of the Vans Shop Riot 2017. Hardflip front board to fakie, Biggerflip front board, hardflip late flip to flat… That’s what it took to take the win. The level of skating was incredible, even though it felt like it was -10 degrees outside and inside the park. Skate Boutique, out of Belgium, took the win, followed by Skate Warehouse who placed second and Burnside who placed third.
Our man Conny Mirbach came through to party with us at the Adidas x Alltimers launch party and as photographers do they shoot. This was no normal party though, there were some extra measures in place to make sure that our special meters where filled all the way up.
The party started where it always starts at Berlin’s staple skate shop Civilist. We met some people talked about skateboard history and had some “warm up” drinks. Until things moved next location.
The main location included soccer, bull riding, boxing, and many other activities they really hit the nail on the head with this one (pun intended). Honestly, though, it was great and if you won at any of the games got a free drink to celebrate, needless to say, some of our staff stayed until they closed the party down.
“The global karaoke market has been estimated to be worth nearly $10 billion.” We just got the news that the karaoke share is increasing arithmetically since last Tuesday and it seems to be a good time to invest. Another increasing thing was happy faces because we saw them everywhere. A good time with good people at a good bar on a fucking good night, thank you guys for coming out. You are the best! S/O to Nike SB for the support and Heiners Bar for being the coolest Bar in Berlin.
Hélas and adidas spared no effort to present their new collection in Paris. On three floors you could dive into a white and green world of tennis, meet almost every common face from the Parisian skate scene and important guests from all over Europe, expensive champagne and exquisite snacks were served and then there he was – Suddenly the lights went off and the upcoming French rap superstar Kekra entered the stage, and in less than a minute the vernissage-like meet and greet event turned into a gangster rap concert. As someone whose heart is beating for all sorts of rap it will remain an unforgettable night in blurry pictures. In this spirit, thanks for having me!
Already three weeks ago Hamburg’s infamous Stanley WE crew premiered their second full length called Unalowe. Unfortunately, I couldn’t follow an invitation, and thus I could do nothing but believe the circulating and in every respect positive rumors spread by some of the roughly 500 guests of the event, which made me conclude that my non-attendence certainly might have been a piece of really bad luck. However, today my friend Philipp from the Lobby Skateshop in Hamburg got me a private link to the video, and I finally could convince myself that this video is truely an outstanding work. Really guys, if you read this, you are awesome! Since I am not allowed to share the video here yet, I at least can provide you with some snapshot impressions of the premiere evening and give you the advice to keep your eyes open for the video as soon as it will be available somewhere, which, as I assume, will be rather sooner than later.
Last Wednesday we celebrated the fact that we just turned 10, we had it all setup. We had a nice location that had what we needed. Multiple projectors for our videos, a sound installation for the music, a DJ booth for our DJ’s to stand behind, a bouncer at the entrance and even a guy that managed the elevator. But as soon the party started things started changing. Slowly the people running the bar started noticing that this was in fact not the kind of party they had envisioned, so they kicked us out! Before things even really started. So we did the only right thing to do, we took a cab picked up some alcohol, opened up our office and partied on! Fitting to our current “At Home With” issue and something we actually had contemplated right from the start. As soon people arrived we picked up where we really had not left off but nobody seemed to mind. I say all that to say this, thanks to everybody who celebrated our birthday with us we had a great time!

“The best Berliner skate video since Panorama.” – Unfortunately, I can’t remember who said this to me, but I found this quote really fitting when, a week ago, Dan Schulz‘ independent full length “Oh Snap” premiered at the overcrowded Cassiopeia in Berlin.
Last Saturday Europe Co.‘s second VX full length called autobahn was premiered to a full house at Lobby Skate Shop in Hamburg. It was a boozy evening accompanied by nice DJ sets by Sprite Eyez and Shorty Banks playing all sorts of trap rap on real turntables, which ensured a hyped up mob before the premiere as well as a good aftershow party following. Last week PLACE issue 58 landed in the mail. Tradition says when an issue is done it is time to host a party. This time it had to be Amsterdam. And that was our gut feeling talking. Trust your gut, people! So, when the time came, we linked up with the people from POP Trading Company & G’s to set the right atmosphere, it all turned out well and it was a great evening.

Friday the first of April, it sounded like a joke to us but as it turned out it wasn’t. It was the actual premiere date of the new Radio Skateboards video “Late but Short”.
We had heard stories about the last time Radio premiered a video. People arriving in limousines, streets being blocked off and inappropriate behavior only appropriate for a Radio event. “Late but Short” delivered, the video featured the entire team, friends and guests some expected and some unexpected. The whole Berlin skate and party scene came out to SO36 to celebrate the video in a way that can not be described. We will save you the details and just show you what happened. Snapshot is forever.
Looks like the new thing for this year is having skateboard events by the beachside. And guess what: we don’t mind that! Mille Grazie to Vans for the invitation to this year’s edition of the Vans Spring Classic. It’s the most popular mini ramp contest in Italy, not only showcasing some of the best transition skaters from Europe but also from the U.S.. The Anti Hero team showed up including Grant Taylor who definitely turned out to be the biggest name to annihilate this amazing and newly built ramp. Located in the beach town of Riccione, close to Rimini, the Spring Classic not only offered insanely great skateboarding, but also a lot nice entertainment surrounding the main event – from concerts, to parties, free beers, all the way to girls in blue dresses dancing like there’s no tomorrow. All in all, it was a weekend where it was easy to get a solid sunburn while watching mini ramp skating at it’s best while meeting awesome people. The Italians call it la dolce vita – and we want more!

Als wir vor dem Hotel unser Shuttle nach Badalona betreten wollen öffnet uns der Fahrer mit den Worten “Living the dream!” die Tür und wir amüsieren uns köstlich darüber. Warum hat er das gesagt? Wie konnte er nur wissen? Barcelona ist noch immer ein Traum für Skateboarder – Streetlife am MACBA mit 300 Leuten, kaltes Cerveza, ein Contest in der Stadt, durch den ein längst vergangenes Mastership-Feeling aufkommt, perfekte Bodenverhältnisse, usw., etc. pp.. Vier Tage lang treiben wir uns auf unseren Boards zwischen Street League, Strandpromenade, Tapasbars, Curblines und Contestparties herum, bewaffnet mit den berühmt berüchtigten PLACE Snapshot Kameras, um das einzufangen was außerhalb des Skateparks passiert – ganz normaler, investigativer Skateboard-Journalismus eben.
Für diesen besonderen Jahresrückblick wühlen wir uns durch die die Untiefen unseres iPhone-Fotoalbums. Dabei merken wir sofort, dass auch im Jahr 2014 wieder eine Menge los gewesen ist: wir waren unterwegs, haben Leute getroffen, Momente erlebt, Dinge gesehen, Sachen gemacht und unterm Strich ein wirklich gutes Jahr gehabt. Zeit also, dieses noch einmal in Stichpunkten Revue passieren zu lassen:

Treffpunkt sollte der SHRN Skateshop sein, der zur geselligen Cornerei geladen hatte, um die neue PLACE Ausgabe 049 zu präsentieren, dazu gab es eine Liveperformance des Topdogs im Schaufenster und die Videopremiere des neuen enjoi Videos “Oververt”. Die Münchener sind hervoragende Gastgeber und so wurde über drei Tage lang geschlemmt, getrunken, gelacht und Münchener Luxus-Lifestyle zelebriert. Nichts anderes hatten wir erwartet, also folgt nun die ungeschönte Wahrheit aus den Snapshot Kameras von Danny Sommerfeld und Benni Markstein.

Dieser treibt sich in der französischen Hauptstadt herum, da am Abend sein Videofeature “This Is Janoski” vom Desillusion Magazin premiert werden wird. Sprachmemo Der Flug, 08:32 Uhr, Stimme des Flugbegleiters: “Remaining flight time is 10 to 15 minutes and the temperature in Paris is quite chilly, 14°.”
Als erste Anlaufstelle für Skater in einer Stadt bietet sich stets ein guter Skateshop an. In Paris heißt dieser Nozbone, für den u.a. Kevin Rodrigues, Sylvain Tognelli und Sam Partaix unterwegs sind.
Ein Ohrwurm kann schlimm sein. Bei Befall kreist einem ein bestimmtes Lied mit einer bestimmten Melodie eingängig durch den Kopf, so dass es beinahe weh tut man aber nichts dagegen tun kann. Jemand setzt nur zu einem kleinen Pfiff an oder sagt nur ein Wort und schon brummt der Hit erneut durch den Gehörgang. Meistens allerdings ist ein Ohrwurm ein Zeichen dafür, dass ein Musikstück einprägsam ist, gefällt und an besondere Momente erinnert. So einen besonderen Moment gab es während unseres Ausflugs nach Finnland zum Helsinki Hookup Jam, als wir uns eines Abends auf dem Weg zur Contestparty im Karaokebus wiederfanden. Betrunkene Skateboarder und bescheuerte Musik entfachten in Kombination ein gesangliches Feuerwerk der Emotionen im Rahmen eines Contests, auf dem man nicht verlieren, sondern nur gewinnen konnte… Ein fotografischer Reisebericht einer bezaubernden Stadt über ereignisreiche Tage zwischen Contest, Party und Kultur.

CONTEST Die Contest Arena in der Helsinki Ice Hall
Die besten Parties im Cassiopeia sind dann zu Ende, wenn die Sonne wieder scheint und diese stand bereits am Himmel, als wir den Club über den Biergarten hinaus auf das RAW Gelände verlassen haben. Die ersten Nike SB Berlin Open haben viele Sensationen hervorgebracht, erst in der Skatehalle und dann später auf den drei Dancefloors. Wir haben getanzt, gelacht, getrunken und viel Freude daran gehabt bis in die Morgenstunden mit euch zu feiern. Besonderer Dank geht an die Looky Looky Girls, Bass Gang, A Million, Esther Silex und Marius Krickow für ihre grandiosen Auftritte hinter den Plattentellern. Der Kater ist mittlerweile überstanden und wir verbleiben bis zur nächsten Placemag Party mit schönen Grüßen und in Vorfreude! Hier die ungeschönte Wahrheit aus den Quicksnap Kameras:
